In the words of creators Jules and Gebs, the guiding principle behind @RavveBeauty is to “represent the type of extreme underground beauty you only see at the raves. A type of beauty so individual it cannot be shared or replicated.” Culling from tattoo artists, piercing parlors, makeup artists, influencers and labels alike, the duo’s account spotlights all things alternative beauty: unusual body modifications, unwearable makeup looks, digitally enhanced manipulations, impractical false lashes, gravity-defying hairdos, outlandish contact lenses, and much, much more.

@RavveBeauty is but one of many accounts pushing the boundaries of beauty. Korean artist @melovemealot, perhaps best known for starting the wavy-brows trend, often digitally distorts her face and body, and the extreme otherworldly glamor of the duo known as Fecal Matter blurs the line between fashion and performance art.

These accounts celebrate beauty that is weird, imperfect, or even ugly, and stand in direct contrast to the interchangeable droves of airbrushed, preened Instagrams belonging to name brands and influencers. The likes of @RavveBeauty are not concerned with accentuating the conventionally beautiful. Instead, they challenge our normative notions of beauty by championing unique forms of self-expression. Their vision of unrepentant otherness is an empowering one, for those who embody it and those who see them, and cheer them on.
