Instagram account @subwayhands, curated and photographed by Hannah La Follette Ryan, is dedicated to the peculiar subject of the hands of subway riders. Yes, hands. The Instagram is a montage of hands that are bejeweled, curled gingerly around a pole, gloved, wringing, entwined with one another, wrapped around a smart phone—among hundreds of other variations in countless arrangements and adornments.
But why hands? In Ryan’s own words, hands are “expressive paddles that mediate our relationship with the world."" They are “beautiful and deeply weird.” And by all means, there is an undeniable sense of beauty to be found in these close-ups of grasping and shiftless hands.
Through Ryan’s discerning eye, the minutiae of everyday urban life is rendered artful and candid; crafty and creative, unposed and honest. Given the constraints of the 9-to-5 work grind, it may be near impossible for most commuters (and Ryan’s subjects) to find time to stop and smell the roses. Perhaps a scroll through @subwayhands can be a satisfactory substitute in the meantime.
